2011 Track Champions Crowned: Storm, Liberman
Take Home Checkers In "The Big One"
.9/17/11
Dustin Storm took home his second feature win in 2011, and Doug Liberman was
declared the winner in the second event for his first feature win in 2011. Storm would
have been a double winner had it not been for a DQ in the second event. Crossing the
stripe first, it was found that an ineligible right rear tire was mounted on his car
during a caution. He was moved back the tail end of the lead lap cars by track officials,
which gave the win to Liberman. David Polenz needed not to even start the event to claim
his first ever Late Model track championship as Adam Brenner, the only driver with a
mathematical shot at the title, elected not to participate in the final event of the
season. Polenz wound up winning the championship by a whopping 105 points over Liberman.
Davey Callihan finished third in the final points chase, followed by Brenner, who dropped
to fourth.
Tyler Hughes had a healthy lead in the points chase for the Legends division track crown,
and did what he had to do to take home his first track championship at ODS. With his
fourth place finish, he takes home the title by 18 points over rival Cody Scott. Ryan
Polenz held on to finish third in the championship chase. The final 30 lap feature for the
Legends was dominated and won by Rette Causey. It was Causey's third feature win in three
tries in 2011.
Nathan Brasz and Bert Brasz, the father and son duo, came into the night's final event
tied for the points lead in the Capital Remodeling UCAR division. Only 20 laps would
decide the championship. When the dust had settled, Nathan would finish second, while the
elder Brasz would wind up third. This would give Nathan the track title by just 2 points.
Tony Mills would take home the win for his second victory in 2011.
Mark Averi had pretty much wrapped up the Street Stock title before the green even waved
on the field for their 50 lap event. Trying to take the title and the win, he came up a
bit short, finishing second to Robert Bruce, who was subbing for an ailing Alfred Tull in
the feature event.
Dakota Scott took over the lead late in the going from Mason Diaz who developed carburetor
problems, and won his second feature in 2011. Jonathan Findley, who had a virtual lock on
the championship heading into the final event, was involved in an early race accident. He
was able to continue, and limped home to a sixth place finish. That finished gave him the
championship by 14 points over Scott.
Brian Lawson powered his way to the win in the Va. Sprint Series feature event over Billy
Norfleet and French Grimes.
The 2011 NASCAR Whelen All American Series season is now concluded. Congratulations go out
to all the track champions. the 2012 season will be here before you know it. Have a safe
off-season!!

Polenz Does The Double; Inches Closer To The Title
.9/3/11
David Polenz came into the night's activities with one thing in mind, finish ahead of
Adam Brenner. Not only did he accomplish what he set out to do, but he did it twice,
taking both ends of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model double feature
Saturday night at the Old Dominion Speedway. Polenz entered the night with a hefty 39
point advantage, and needed to retain as much a lead as possible after the night's events.
When the dust had settled, he had picked up two wins, and has stretched his lead over the
defending track champion Brenner to 85 points with 2 points paying events remaining.
Brenner still has a mathematical shot at the title, but a lot of events would have to fall
into place not once, but twice when the final events are run in two weeks. Stranger things
have happened, so Polenz still needs to do what he has done all season long, and that's be
as smooth and consistent as possible. His current numbers include 4 feature wins, 14 top
five's, and 15 top ten's. His average finish of 3.69 is best by far of any driver this
season at ODS that has started all of the 16 events. The final event of the season, the
ODS "Big One" is scheduled for Saturday night, September 17th. The rain date for
the event would be Saturday night, September 24th. In the first event, Polenz finished
ahead of Michael Hardin, Davey Callihan, Paul Green, and Dustin Storm. In the second
event, the Polenz led the charge to the checkers ahead of Hardin, Storm, Callihan, and
Green.
Ryan Polenz led from the early laps and powered his way to victory in the Austin Legends
30 lap event. It was Polenz's second feature win this season. Point leader Cody Scott,
still looking for that first win, took suffered a huge blow as he broke a bolt in the rear
of his machine and wound up finishing 16th. This, combined with Tyler Hughes taking the
third spot, has pushed him back to the second spot in the points chase with one event
remaining. Hughes now has a healthy 20 point lead heading into the final night's
activities. Following Polenz across the stripe was Tyler Kivett, Hughes, Joseph Bisson,
and a career best finish for Joe Cogliano.
The father and son team of Nathan Brasz and Bert Brasz came into the night's events
separated by just 2 points, with the elder Bert clinging to the top spot in the point
standings in the Capital Remodeling UCAR division. Nathan did what he needed to do, and
that was take home the win (his 5th), but father Bert hung tough and held on for the
second spot. This sets up a first in the 50-plus years at ODS, a tie for the points chase
with one event remaining between a father and son. Finishing third in the 20 lap event
after the Brasz duo was John Flanagan, who has an extreme (mathematically) chance at
stealing the title, followed by David Gonce, and Greg Sites. Bobby Able, a former track
champ, came into the night with a slim 2 point advantage in the Mini Modified division
over Mike Carte. Able only had to finish ahead of or no more than 1 spot behind Carte to
claim the track title. His second place finish, behind feature winner Pete Green, was
enough to claim another Mini Modified championship over Carte, who finished third. Keith
and Joe Riley rounded out the top five.
Jeff Sweeney came out on top of the epic battle between himself and Mike Ganoe, and took
his first feature win in 2011 in the 35 lap Pure Stock feature. Sweeney and Ganoe traded
paint and the top position on numerous occasions throughout the race, with Sweeney finally
taking over for good with just 5 laps remaining. With his second place finish, Ganoe take
the points championship in the Pure Stock division over Brian Smith by just 4 points.
Tim Brown led almost every lap and took home the win in the 20 lap SRL Mini Cup event.
Young Ben Burch held on to finish second, just ahead of Gavin Jenkins.
Next Saturday night, the Old Dominion Speedway oval is closed. In two weeks, exciting
NASCAR Racing returns to the 3/8 mile oval for the ODS "Big One". Also on the
schedule for the final night of racing for the 2011 season will be features for the
Legends, UCAR's, Va. Sprint Series, Street Stocks, and Bandoleros. Track titles will up
for grabs in the Late Model, Street Stock, UCAR, Legends, and Bandolero divisions.
Practice starts at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
Old Dominion Speedway Loses One Of Its Legends
.8/29/11
Reds Kagle, one of only two 5-time track champions at the famed 3/8 mile oval, passed
away on Monday, August 29th. Kagle, who had hundreds of wins up and down the East Coast
during his career, passed away quietly after a brief illness. Born on April 20, 1932,
Kagle began competing in the Grand National Division (now Sprint Cup) in 1954, competing
in one event that season. Sixty-four entries started that event, and Kagle came home 17th
driving a Studebaker. His purse for that day was $175.00. His career continued until 1961,
when he competed in just 3 events that season. His Grand National career totals included
25 starts, 3 top 5s, and 9 top 10s. 1958 was his best season as a driver,
finishing in the top 5 twice and scoring 7 top 10s in 14 events. But Kagle will
better be remembered as one of the best there ever was on the short tracks, battling
legends like Roy Hendrick, Jack Bland, and Bobby Ballentine on his way to several wins and
track championships throughout his storied career.
More News and Notes From ODS
.8/27/11
OK, so I am sitting here in my office, waiting for Irene to get finished with whatever
she's going to do out here in Front Royal. It now appears that most of her fury will be to
the East of my location, so all seems to be good on the home front. Trouble is, one more
weekend without a single competitive lap at the Old Dominion Speedway has taken its toll
on me. July 30th was a long time ago. That was last time there was an actual event held at
the famed 3/8 mile oval. I need my fix. And with only one more weekend for me to climb
back up in to the flagstand, I have to say, I'm really getting antsy. Next Saturday night,
September 3rd is the Racing Legends Reunion, a very popular event for not only the fans,
but to former and current drivers and crews. Many stars of yesteryear that have put down
rubber on the banks for the Old Dominion Speedway will be in attendance. My last chance to
attend an event at ODS in 2011. The following weekend, September 10th, the ODS oval will
be dark for yet another Cup Series Saturday night race. Most tracks in the area don't race
as well due to that event. It seems the "big boys" in Daytona Beach have
forgotten where they came from. But that is a whole different issue. Saturday night,
September 17th is the "ODS Big One". That event is always fun to watch because
many drivers from various tracks show up to take home the big paycheck. Unfortunately my
schedule won't allow me to attend the season finale. Only if the rains come again on the
17thwould I be able to get one last event in under my belt as the rain date for the
"Big One" is September 24th. Doesn't seem that long ago that we were in April.
September seemed so far away. There were what looked like a limitless amount of laps to be
run. But here we are, about to write the final chapter in the 2011 season. Let's sum up
the points chases in the various divisions:
It's pretty much a two-horse race in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model
division chase for the championship. That being said, the only thing that would need to
happen is that David Polenz would virtually have to implode for him to lose the
championship. A 39 point lead heading into the final few weeks is a tough road to hoe. But
stranger things have happened in this sport, so don't count defending Late Model Track
champion Adam Brenner. The Fat Lady can't start singing just yet.
The Legends division has been back and forth throughout most of the season. Young guns
Cody Scott, Tyler Hughes, and Ryan Polenz have all been on or near the top of the point
standings all season long. As it stands now, Scott holds a slight edge in the points by
virtue of his consistent finishes from the drop of the green back in April. He has
finished no worse than fourth all season long, yet is still looking for that elusive first
feature win. Hughes, on the flip-side, has dominated the division with 7 wins in 2011. But
that 14th place finish back in June, combined with a 7th place finish in May put him in a
bit of a hole. A hole he has fought so hard to get out of with 3 wins in the last 4
events. Hughes now is just 6 points out of the lead. Polenz was a contender early in the
season, but mechanical failures have been an issue. He is a distant 3rd in points, and
will not be a factor for the championship race at this point.
The Mini Modified division has one scheduled feature left in 2011. Bobby Able and Mike
Carte, veterans in the division and who have battled for championships in the past, are
atop the standings, with just 2 points separating Able from Carte for the championship.
Able would just need to finish ahead of or no more than 1 spot behind Carte in the final
event to secure the championship. If the drivers would tie at season's end, Able would
take the championship by virtue of his win total. Look for those two competitors to trade
some paint as the final laps wind down. The only other driver in the division with a win
is Keith Riley. He is a distant third in the points chase and should retain that position
at season's end.
The Capital Remodeling UCAR division looks like it will come down to the final event to
determine the track champion. Interesting story here, though. Old Dominion Speedway has
always prided itself as a family oriented atmosphere. Many generations of drivers have
competed against each other, from brothers, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, and
even mothers and sons. The story in the UCAR division is not so much as the father and son
team of Nathan and Bert Brasz are competing against each other. The storyline here is that
they are competing for the track championship. Father Bert Brasz has the point lead (258
points), which he took over from son Nathan (256 points) back in July when he was
drop-kicked heading into turn three by an out-of-town driver. The stats are pretty
impressive as they are almost dead even. Nathan has the win column edge with 4 wins
compared to Bert's 1 win. But Bert has the top 5 and top 10 advantage, which computes to a
3.62 finishing average. Nathan's average finish is slightly higher at a 3.69. Look for
these 2 drivers to not give an inch in the final 2 races. It's certainly going to be an
interesting conversation at the dinner table at season's end. John Flanagan, who is in his
first season at ODS, is sitting in the third spot with 234 points. If things go South for
the two point leaders in remaining 2 events, Flanagan could wind up stealing the
championship.
Over in the Sign Shop Bandolero division, Jonathan Findley pretty much has things under
control. His point lead is almost to the point where he cannot be caught with only one
event remaining. Dakota Scott is still mathematically in the chase. A huge field, Findley
running into some extremely bad luck, and a win by Scott would be his only chance to take
the title away. Looking at the weather report right now it appears we will get the event
in on September 3rd. But since Saturday night is a week away, things could change 20 times
between now and then. Let's cross our fingers and hope we have a great Saturday night to
enjoy some great racing and re-live the past with the Legends of ODS. It would certainly
make my final night in 2011 a great one. See ya there!!

News and Notes From The Old Dominion Speedway
.8/22/11
As we wind up yet another exciting season at the Old Dominion Speedway, let's look back
at some of the highlights in the Late Model division from 2011: Young David Polenz has not
mathematically wrapped up the Late Model championship, but would have to have an internal
meltdown to lose it at this point. With a 39 point lead heading into the final few events
at the legendary oval, he will almost certainly take the championship home to Pattonburg,
NJ (although he currently hangs his hat in Manassas right now). Defending Late Model
champion Adam Brenner has suffered a couple of engine woes in his Ford powerplant in 2011,
which has put him in a deep hole. Not even the borrowed machine of Ray Terczak has allowed
him to keep pace with Polenz. Another story, young Brandon Brown of Woodbridge Va. has
surprised a lot of folks with his 3 wins in 2011. But inconsistency and a DQ earlier in
the season has set him back some 81 points, so his chances for a track title are set back
another year. Veteran Doug Liberman started the season off strong and was a contender for
the title. But a couple of mechanical issues and crashes in the latter part of the season
stalled his effort. He currently sits in fourth place in the points, and could
mathematically finish second if he finishes strong and other drivers have some bad luck.
The story of the season thus far has to be the veteran Mike Darne. Scheduled to only
compete in a handful of events this season for the powerful Ronnie Wolfe Racing Team,
Darne has taken home the winner's share of the purse on five occasions in eight events. He
has yet to finish out of the top ten in 2011, which is exactly what he accomplished in
2010 when he scored 3 wins in 9 events. His win's include his second Joe Gibb's benefit
event in as many years, and his current average finish of 3 is the best of any Late Model
driver this season. Besides Polenz, Brenner, Brown, and Darne, the only other driver to
grab a win is Dustin Storm. Storm was a heavy favorite to take home his second track title
in 2011 when he teamed up with Sam Beaty and the Foster's Grille machine. However, things
did not work out as planned, as Storm has only piloted Beaty's Chevy in 9 of 14 events
this season.
Looking ahead to this weekend, the big story is not so much about the full schedule of
racing action at the Old Dominion Speedway, which includes Late Models, Mini Cups, UCAR's,
Bandoleros, Legends, and Street Stocks (Rolling Thunder Modifieds have been scratched from
the schedule). All eyes are on the weather, as Hurricane Irene is set to possibly strike
the East Coast this week. Current tracks have Irene hitting the Mid-Atlantic region late
Friday and into Sunday, which could effect racing activities scheduled all up and down the
East Coast.
NOTES: The average car count in the Late Model field this
season is about the same as 2010 (15.21 in 2011 to 15.35 in 2010). The big difference is
there were not as many start-and-park cars this season as last. The total number of
drivers this season is down a bit from 54 different drivers in 2010 to 44 different
drivers in 2011. The average finishing position for defending track champ Adam Brenner
last season was 4th. This season, thus far, the average finish for point leader David
Polenz is 4.07. Polenz's average finishing position in 2010 was 4.55. 4 drivers competed
in all events at ODS in 2011, while this season the number increased to 6 drivers
competing in all events. Rain
canceled events on 3 occasions in 2010, while thus far, weather has canceled 6 events in
2011.
Rain Prevails Again
.8/13/11
For the fifth time this season, rains have dampened the spirits of the racing community
at the Old Dominion Speedway. Rains were not even in the forecast until later in the
evening, but an early afternoon shower caused track officials to stop the program. This is
the second week in a row that weather has impacted the schedule at ODS. Next Saturday
night the Old Dominion Speedway oval will be dark for the Prince William County Fair. The
schedule for the following Saturday night, August 27th, will include a 100 lap feature for
the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Drivers in the division will
be able to purchase 4 tires for this event. In addition, the Legends cars will compete in
a 30 lap event, along with a 75 lap feature for the Rolling Thunder Modifieds, 20 laps for
the Sign Shop Bandoleros. Also on the schedule are the Mid-Atlantic Street Stocks, the
Capital Remodeling UCAR's, and the Mini Cups. Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set
for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
Rain Cancels Racing Program At ODS
.8/6/11
Predicted rains have forced cancellation of activities at the Legendary Old Dominion
Speedway in Manassas, Va. Just as the clock struck the 6 o'clock hour, a steady shower
moved through the area. Forecasters predicted this was one of many pop-up showers that
were expected to last throughout the night. A slight schedule change for next Saturday
night will feature a 100 lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars
(originally scheduled for 75 laps) feature. Also on the schedule is a 30 lap Austin
Legends feature, a 20 lap Capital Remodeling UCAR feature, a 25 lap Mini Modified event,
and a 20 lap Sign Shop Bandolero feature. Returning to the Old Dominion Speedway will be
the Pure Stocks, as they will compete in a 35 lap event. Practice begins at 2PM, with
qualifying set for 5PM. Racing takes the green at 7PM.
Brown Wins 3rd Feature Event In 2011
.7/30/11
Brandon Brown from Woodbridge Va. picked up his third feature event win in 2011,
outdistancing point leader David Polenz in the 75 lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Brown took over the top spot from early leader
Doug Liberman on lap 26, and led the rest of the way to claim the win. Polenz, who had
started from the third row, made his way through the pack, taking the third spot on lap 2,
then making his way up to second by lap 4. But he was unable to take the top spot from
Liberman, who seemed to have everything going his way. But on lap 23, Brown decided it was
time to go, as he got around Polenz for second, and began his quest for the top spot. He
followed Liberman's tire tracks for several laps before making the power and taking the
lead on lap 26. Polenz would push Liberman back one more notch on lap 35 in his quest for
the lead. But at the end, Brown would beat Polenz to the stripe by .182 seconds. Liberman
was able to hold on and finish third, some 11 seconds in arrears, followed by Richard
Storm and Thomas VanDyke. With his second place finish and Adam Brenner's 7th place
finish, Polenz now stretches his point lead to 39 points in his quest for the
championship.
Tyler Hughes won his 7th feature in 11 races, taking home the checkers in the Austin
Legends 30 lap event. Hughes, who was quickest in qualifying for the 7th time in 2011,
took over the lead on lap 5 from Trevor Collins and never looked back, notching yet
another win for the youngster from Cordova Md. Ryan Polenz was runner-up for the 6th time
this season. Finishing third, after a troubles earlier in the event, was point leader Cody
Scott, followed by Gregory Rittenhouse, and Kevin Yeatts. Scott still leads the points
chase, but now the advantage is just 6 points over Hughes.
The Super Cup Stock Car Series invaded the Old Dominion Speedway for the first time ever,
and J.J. Pack, a former Mini Stock and Late Model ace at ODS, took home the win in an
exciting finish. Pack, who had qualified second quickest but had to start from the third
row on the start, made his way through the field and was running second behind leader Jody
Harrison early in the event. Pack was able to close in on Harrison on several occasions,
but could not manage to make the pass. But on lap 95, Harrision slipped just a bit coming
out of turn four, which allowed Pack to take the outside line. Pack made the pass heading
into turn one, and led the final four circuits to claim his first ever feature win at the
famed ODS oval. Harrison, the defending series champion, would hold on to finish second,
while Rob Jones, former Late Model driver Brent Nelson, and Harvey Harrison would round
out the top five.
Tony Mills became yet another first time winner at ODS, taking the checkers in the Capital
Remodeling UCAR 20 lap feature. Mills took over the top spot just before the halfway point
and cruised to his first feature win. John Flanagan edged Jessie Polenz at the stripe to
take home second, while Polenz, Bert Brasz, and David Gonce rounded out the top five. Bert
Brasz takes over the lead in the championship points chase over son Nathan Brasz by just 4
points.
Gavin Jenkins led flag to flag in the SRL Mini Cup feature, taking the win by 1.354
seconds over Time Brown, Ben Burch would finish third in the 20 lap event. And Mark Averi
picked up yet another win in the Mid-Atlantic Street Stock 20 lap feature. Phil Kenny
would finish second, followed by Jeremy Bowers and Alfred Tull. Next Saturday night, the
Late Models will be featured in a 100 lap feature. Also on the schedule are the Va. Sprint
Series, Mini Modifieds, UCAR's, Legends, and the Bandoleros. Practice begins at 2PM with
qualifying set for 5PM. Racing takes the green at 7PM.
Darne Takes Second YFT 150 Lap Feature Win: LM And UCAR Point Leaders Take A
Hit
.7/23/11
When the big events are scheduled, the big guns come out. This season, the biggest gun
has been Mike Darne. The veteran driver has made the trip from Lake Norman NC to the
legendary Old Dominion Speedway six times this season, and has gone home with five
winner's trophies. Saturday night, Darne took home his biggest trophy of the season,
dominating the Joe Gibbs Youth For Tomorrow 150 feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American
Series Late Model Stock Cars. The win was his second YFT win and much like the first one,
taking the lead early, and holding off all challenges for the win. The field was scattered
with a who's who of NASCAR stars. Sprint Cup driver Andy Lally was on hand, along with
NASCAR Truck champions Ron Hornaday, Johnny Benson, and Mike Skinner. Curtis Markham, a
former Old Dominion Speedway track champ was on hand. And 2-time Daytona 500 winner
Sterling Marlin arrived at the Old Dominion Speedway for the first time. Darne led all 26
qualifiers in time trials, circling the 3/8 mile oval in 15.801 seconds in his CGL Chevy.
Adam Brenner was second quickest in his BrandonBilt Foundation Ford with a 15.812 lap,
followed by Brandon Brown, winner of the last two events at ODS, with a 15.845 lap. David
Polenz (15.885), Doug Liberman (15.951) and Lally (15.966) rounded out the top six
qualifiers. The field was inverted based on the top six qualifiers, which put Lally on the
pole, with Liberman on the outside pole. The green dropped on the star-studded field, and
Liberman wasted no time getting to the front. He would lead the charge until lap 41 when
Darne muscled his way to the top spot. Polenz and former track champ Dustin Storm would
follow Darne, dropping Liberman back to fourth. As the race progressed, it appeared it
would be a three car race, as Darne, Polenz, and Storm stretched their lead on every lap.
At the 75 lap mark, there was a break for the crews to make adjustment to their machines.
Once the green flew again, it still appeared the three top cars were the ones to beat. But
as the laps wound down, Storm began to fade, but Polenz was still in Darne's tire tracks.
But Darne was consistently too strong throughout the entire event, and crossed the stripe
.206 seconds ahead of Polenz. Storm held on for a third place finish, while Liberman,
Willard Lawrence, and rookie Dave Daniels rounded out the top six finishers. Coming into
the night's activities, Adam Brenner had a 7 point lead over Polenz. But Brenner
experienced mechanical issues on lap 25, and wound up 25th. Polenz now has the point lead
by 29 points.
Tyler Hughes took home his sixth win in 2011, taking the lead from point leader Cody Scott
on lap six. Hughes, who had been the point leader earlier in the season but suffered a
couple of mechanical woes, dominated the remainder of the event after taking the top spot,
and crossed the stripe .914 seconds ahead of Scott. With the win, Hughes was able to shave
off another two points in the championship chase, and now is just ten markers behind
Scott. Finishing third was Ryan Polenz, followed by Max Smith, Trevor Collins, and Chris
Shepard.
Jerold Harris picked up another feature win in the Va. Sprint Series 35 lap event. Harris
took the lead after a late race caution over his brother Tony Harris to secure the win.
Finishing third was Tom Humphries, followed by Brian Lawson and Chris Ware. Jonathan
Finley led all but the first lap, and held off a charging Ryan Plummer and Amanda Godby to
take home his third win in 2011 in the Sign Shop Bandolero feature. And Bert Brasz won his
first ever feature in the Capital Remodeling UCAR 20 lap event. Brasz held off Frank Silva
by a couple of car lengths when the checkers flew. David Gonce, John Flanagan, and Steve
Brady rounded out the top five finishers. With his win, and point leader (and son) Nathan
Brasz being involved in an early race incident, Bert Brasz now trails Nathan Brasz by just
two points in the points chase.
Next Saturday night features a 75 lap event for the Late Model Stock Cars. Also in the
schedule is a 30 lap feature for the Legends, a 20 lap event for the UCAR's, a 20 lap
feature for the Mini Cups, and also a feature event for the Street Stocks. In addition,
there will be a special 100 lap event for the Super Cup Stock Car Series. Practice begins
at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
NOTES: Ron Hornaday, Johnny Benson, Mike Skinner, and Max Papis
all donated extra cash to various finishers in the Bandolero division. Jerold Harris
circled the 3/8 mile Old Dominion Speedway oval in the fastest lap time ever. His lap of
13.608 (99.199 mph) on lap 16 of the Va. Sprint Series feature event is the fastest lap
ever recorded at the famed facility.
Brown Makes It Two Straight
.7/16/11
It took about a half a season, but the BrandonBilt Foundation / Glory Days Grill Team
of Brandon Brown seems to now have all the bugs worked out. After a slow start to the
season, marred by mechanical failures and crashes, the team is now headed in the right
direction. Saturday night, Brown picked up his second win in a row in the 75 lap feature
for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars, dominating the event for
his second feature win in 2011. Once out in front, he cruised to the win over the
remainder of the field. Starting from the sixth spot, it only took the youngster six
circuits to take over the top spot from the Interstate Moving Services Chevy early leader
Davey Callahan. Once that pass was complete, the field settled in for basically a battle
for second. AT one point during the event, Brown had a full straightaway lead of the
second place driver. Only a late race caution period for a major incident involving Doug
Liberman and Les Miranda enabled the second place driver, Mike Southard, to keep it even
remotely close. At the end, Brown would cross the stripe some 5.4 seconds ahead of
Southard. Point leader Adam Brenner would bring his Ford home to a third place finish,
followed by Paul Green, and David Polenz. Brenner has a bit more breathing room in the
point standings, and he came into the event just 3 points ahead of Polenz. His point lead
now is just 7 points.
Max Smith made his 2011 debut at ODS, and not only paced the Austin Legends field in
qualifying, but also took home the feature win in the 30 lap event. Smith started from the
fifth starting spot, and muscled his way to the front, taking the top spot from early
leader Ryan Polenz. Polenz, who seemed to have everything going his way, developed
mechanical problems on his Sun Drop sponsored ride on lap 14, handing the lead to Smith.
Tyler Hughes, who has been on a tear as of late, was running second when smoke began to
billow out of his Seven Seas Yacht Service machine. He pitted under caution and the crew
found that the oil cap had become dislodged. They replaced the cap, but with only ten laps
to go, he found himself in the back of the field. But in those ten laps, he was able to
work his way towards the front, and salvage a second place finish. Point leader Cody
Scott, who has yet to finish out of the top four all season long, finished third for the
fifth time, but still maintains the point lead over Hughes by 12 points.
Point leader Nathan Brasz took advantage of his front row starting position, and took home
his fourth win in 2011, narrowly beating John Flanagan to the stripe in the 20 lap Capital
Remodeling UCAR feature. The win was not easy, as in the early stages, Brasz had to fight
off a determined Jessie Polenz for the top spot. Polenz tried on several occasions to take
over the top spot, was just a bit short each time. Late in the going, she got a good run
on Brasz, but the car got away from her a bit as they entered turn one. This allowed
Flanagan, who was following close behind Polenz, to snag the second spot. Polenz was able
to hold on, and finish third.
In other racing action:
The ISCARS visited the Old Dominion Speedway for the first time, and veteran Danny Bagwell
took home the win in both 75 lap features for the V-6 powered sub-compact machines. Tim
Brown dominated the event in the 20 lap SRL Mini Cup feature, and Mark Averi led virtually
every lap in the 15 lap Street Stock feature.
Next Saturday night will undoubtedly be the biggest event of the season at the Old
Dominion Speedway. The 2nd annual Joe Gibbs Youth For Tomorrow Charity Event is scheduled
with events, rides, and celebrities scheduled to attend all day long. Guest NASCAR drivers
include Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin, along with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
champions Ron Hornaday, Johnny Benson, and Mike Skinner. Also scheduled to appear is
current Sprint Cup driver Andy Lally, along with Max Papis, and former ODS track champ
Curtis Markham. These drivers, along with current Late Model drivers, will be competing in
the YFT 150 lap feature for the Late Model Stock Cars. Also on the schedule is a 30 lap
feature for the Legends, 20 laps for the Sign Shop Bandoleros, 20 laps for Capital
Remodeling UCAR's, and a 25 lap feature for the Va. Sprint Series. A special practice time
of 12 noon kicks things off.
Brandon Brown Picks Up First Win In 2011
.7/9/11
Brandon Brown from Woodbridge Va. made it look easy Saturday night at the Old Dominion
Speedway. Starting from the front row after the inversion, Brown led flag-to-flag,
piloting his Glory Days Grill / BrandonBilt Foundation Chevy to an easy win in the 75 lap
feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Mike Darne set
the pace in qualifying earlier in the evening, circling the 3/8 mile oval in his CGL Chevy
with a 15.807 lap. Defending track champ and current point leader Adam Brenner was second
quickest in his Ford with a 15.870 lap, followed by Brown with a 15.880 lap. After the
inversion, Darne would have to start from the 6th spot, while Brenner would start 5th. The
green waved and Brown darted out in front of Doug Liberman, the other front row starter as
the field thundered into turn one. Liberman was overtaken by David Polenz in the GaZzu
Energy Drink Chevy on lap 12. Darne muscled his way to the top three and challenged Polenz
for several laps before settling back in to third. The event stabilized until lap 14 when
the cars of Ty Miller, Dave Daniels, and Billy Ingle collided on the front straight,
bringing out the caution. Daniels was able to continue in his battered Chevy, but Miller
and Ingle were done for the night. From that point on it was all Brown, who crossed the
stripe .424 seconds ahead of Polenz. Darne held on to finish third, while Liberman and
Robert Bruce rounded out the top five. With his second place finish, combined with
Brenner's sixth place run, Polenz is now just 3 points out of the point lead.
Mason Diaz picked up his second win in five starts, leading flag-to-flag in the 20 lap
Sign Shop Bandolero feature. Diaz was the quick qualifier for the division, and started
from the pole to take the win. Point leader Jonathan Finley made a valiant effort at the
end to snag the win, but came up just .027 seconds short as the two drivers battled to the
checkers. Dakota Scott was just a car length back and finished third, while Ryan Plummer
and D.J. Powell rounded out the top five. Finley's point lead is now just 8 points over
Scott, and 18 point over Diaz.
In another close finish, David Gonce took advantage of lapped traffic, and stole the
victory from Bert Brasz in the 20 lap Capital Remodeling UCAR feature. Brasz led all but
the final feet of the event. Taking the white flag, Brasz had everything in control. But
the two leaders came upon a lapped car that did not give way to the leaders. Gonce was
able to go to the high side as the two drivers tried to pass the slower car. Unfortunately
for Brasz, who is still looking for that elusive first win, the slower car blocked his
path to the checkers, allowing Gonce to snag the win by inches. The win was Gonce's second
win in 2011. Finishing third was Jerry Deem, followed by Steve Brady, and point leader
Nathan Brasz. Bert Brasz now trails son Nathan Brasz in the points chase by just 12
points.
The Pure Stocks returned to the Old Dominion Speedway and Brian Smith took home his first
win of the season in the 35 lap event. Point leader Mike Ganoe finished second, while
Ricky Stotler, Ethan Ayers, and Jeff Sweeney rounded out the top five.
Tyler Hughes bounced back from a mechanical issue suffered two weeks ago, and picked up
win number five in 2011 in the 30 lap Austin Legends feature. Hughes was quick qualifier
for the fifth time this season, and battled his way to the top spot on lap six. Ryan
Polenz, who has finished second on numerous occasions this season, made up some ground in
the latter stages of the event, but ran out of laps and finished 1.122 second behind the
leader. Point leader Cody Scott finished third, while Michael Weddell and Trevor Collins
rounded out the top five. Scott's point lead is now just 14 points over Hughes, and 22
points over Polenz.
Bobby Able took over the lead from Mike Carte, and took home his fourth win in 2011 in the
25 lap Mini Modified feature. Carte would hold on to come home second, while Joe Riley,
Keith Riley, and Todd Johnston rounded out the top five. With his win, Able now leads
Carte by 2 points in the division.
Next Saturday night is Scout Night at the Old Dominion Speedway. All Scouts that come to
the races get in free. Scheduled events include a 75 lap feature for the Late Models, twin
75 lap features for the International Sport Compact Auto Racing Series, 35 laps for the
Mid-Atlantic Street Stocks, 30 laps for the Legends, 20 laps for the UCAR's, and 20 laps
for the Mini Cups. Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action is
set to take the green at 7PM.
In two weeks it's the 2nd annual Joe Gibb's Youth For Tomorrow Benefit Event, featuring
NASCAR drivers Sterling Marlin, Ron Hornaday, Johnny Benson, and a host of other drivers
scheduled to compete. Check out www.olddominionspeedway.com for details and starting
times. Also check out www.yft150.com for advanced ticket sales.
Darne Takes Home Win Number 4
.6/25/11
Mike Darne dominated the field Saturday night at the Old Dominion Speedway, leading all
but 26 laps in the "Military Appreciation Night" 150 lap feature for the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stocks Cars. Darne was the quick qualifier for the
second time this season in his CGL sponsored Chevy, but had to start sixth after the
inversion. But it didn't take long for the former track champion to make his way to the
front. He muscled his way to fifth by lap 5, and took away fourth by lap 6. He then pushed
his way to third by lap 8, and was in the second position by lap 10. He mirrored the
tracks of defending track champ Adam Brenner for another 16 laps before taking the top
spot entering turn one on lap 26. After that, the battles were for the runner-up spot as
no one in the 18 car field had anything for him. David Polenz, who started from the 4th
row in his GaZzu Chevy, worked his way up to the second spot by lap 81, but was not a
factor for the lead. He did have to race hard to keep Brenner in his rear view mirror. At
the end, Darne crossed the stripe ahead of Polenz by .675 seconds after a
green-white-checker finish. Brenner held on to third, while Dave Daniels and Robert Bruce
rounded out the top five. Brenner's point lead was cut by 2 points after his third place
effort. He now leads Polenz by 11 points as the second half of the season gets underway in
a couple of weeks.
Ryan Polenz had been chasing point leader Tyler Hughes throughout the season, finishing
second to Hughes on 3 occasions in 2011. Saturday night, he once again was chasing Hughes,
but wound up with the win as the muffler came off of the point leader with just a few laps
remaining. Polenz then cruised to the win, taking home his first win on 2011, beating Cody
Scott to the line by .353 seconds. Mike Weddell, in his first season at ODS, finished
third for his best finish of the year. He was followed by Joseph Bissom and Jeff Harms.
With his mechanical failure and 14th place finish, Hughes drops from the point lead and
now is in the second spot, 18 points behind Cody Scott. Scott is still looking for that
elusive first win, but his consistent top 4 finishes have given him the point lead heading
into the second half of the season. Polenz was able to gain a lot of ground with his win,
and is now just 24 points out of the lead. (NOTE: The shocks that were taken off Rette
Causey's winning car a couple of weeks ago have been deemed legal by the sanctioning body
(INEX) and Bilstein Shocks. Causey's win stands. Points have been updated reflecting this
decision).
Dakota Scott avoided a first lap accident and cruised to the win in the 20 lap Sign Shop
Bandolero feature. On the initial green, Mason Diaz and Jonathan Findley tangled as they
battled for the lead heading into turn one. They made contact which sent both cars
spinning into the infield grass. Scott was able to avoid the mess and grab the top spot.
Once the green was displayed again, he was able to hold off Michael Munley at the end by
just .176 seconds. Ryan Plummer came home third, while Findley and Diaz rounded out the
top five.
John Flanagan became the 5th different first time winner in 2011 in the Capital Remodeling
UCAR 20 lap feature. Flanagan started on the pole next to Jessie Polenz, and darted out to
the lead in the initial start. But Polenz was able to close the gap, and seemed to have a
faster car. But with just a few laps remaining as she was going for the lead, Polenz's car
bobbled just a bit in turn two, allowing Flanagan to stretch out his lead. It was a lead
he would never give up as took home the checkers. Polenz would hold on for second, while
point leader Nathan Brasz, Bert Brasz, and Tony Mills rounded out the top 5.
Veteran Mike Carte took the checkers for his second win of the season in the 25 lap Mini
Modified feature. Bobby Able was right on his bumper for most of the event, but was unable
to make the pass. Able would finish just two car lengths back. Keith Riley finished third,
while Scott Gore and Kevin Davis rounded out the top five. Carte and Able are now tied
atop the point standings heading into the second half of the 2011 season.
Gerald Frybarger grabbed the lead with just 2 laps remaining and picked up the win in the
30 lap Va. Mini Cup Series event. Frybarger started from the rear of the field after
arriving to the track late, but managed to pick his way to the front. Jason Styron, who
led most of the laps, held on for second, while Kenny Armstrong, Edward Adams, and Daryl
Mason rounded out the top five.
Next Saturday Night, July 2nd, the Old Dominion Speedway oval track will be dark. Racing
action returns on Saturday night, July 9th with 6 feature races. The Late Models will
compete in a 75 lap feature. Also on the schedule is a 30 lap feature for the Legends, a
35 lap feature for the exciting Pure Stocks, and a 20 lap event for the UCAR's. In
addition, the Bandoleros will compete in a 20 lap event with the Mini Modifieds racing for
25 laps. Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action is set to take
the green at 7PM.
Rain
.Again At ODS
.6/18/11
Once again the weather has wreaked havoc at the Old Dominion Speedway. Overcast skies
throughout the day turned into a steady rain just after INEX Legends qualifying, prompting
track officials to postpone the night's events. "Basically what the weather report
was that after the initial hit, there was another front on the way. No sense trying to
beat those odds," track official Hayne Dominick said. With that being said, the plug
was pulled on all events. Old Dominion Speedway will try once more next Saturday night
with a special "Salute to the Troops" 150 lap event for the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars, powered by Miller High Life and On The Run
Stores. All military personnel with a valid Military ID will be admitted free to the
night's activities. In addition, the Late Model feature winner will receive an additional
$2000.00 for winning the event. The second place driver will take home an additional
$1000.00, and the third place finisher will receive an additional $500.00. Also on the
schedule are features for the Mini Modifieds, Legends, Bandoleros, Mini Cups, and UCAR's.
Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
Darne, Brenner Pick Up Wins In Twin 50's
.6/11/11
With all the rain that fell on the East Coast early in the season, the Old Dominion
Speedway has been forced to schedule twin races a bit more frequently that most drivers
would like. The fans love these events, because the races are shorter, and provide a lot
of excitement. The drivers, for the most part hate them, pretty much because of the same
reason. However, if a team hits the right combination and gets the right breaks, it could
work out to be a very good night in terms of the track championship points chase. Mike
Darne, who runs only selected events for the CGL / Ronnie Wolfe Race Team, is not gunning
for the track championship points chase, but did pick up win number three Saturday night
in the first 50 lap event for the NASCAR Whelen-All American Series Late Model Stock Cars.
Darne took over the lead from the BrandonBuilt Foundation Chevy of Brandon Brown on lap 6,
and held on at the end for the win. Adam Brenner, the defending track champ, pulled along
side of Darne on several occasions, but was not able to make the pass. He wound up
finishing second, just .329 seconds in arrears. Former track champ Willard Lawrence,
making his first 2011 start in the Bob Unczer prepared machine, finished third, while Doug
Liberman finished fourth, followed by David Polenz. In the second event, the top four
drivers were inverted, which put Liberman on the pole. He was able to thunder into the
lead on lap one, but was passed by Brenner on lap 20. Brenner then went on to take the
checkers by just over a half a second over Liberman. Brown came home third, while Lawrence
and Polenz rounded out the top five. With his first and second finishes, Brenner now has
re-taken the points lead in the Late Model division. He entered into the night's
activities down by six points, but now has a 13 point lead over Polenz.
Tyler Hughes took home his fourth win in five tries in 2011, taking the checkers in the 30
lap Austin Legends feature. Hughes took over the top spot on lap one, and cruised to the
win over Ryan Polenz by 1.540 seconds. Cody Scott, who has yet to finish out of the top
five this season, finished third, while Kevin Yeatts and Trevor Collins rounded out the
top five.
Jerry Deem led just about every lap, taking his first-ever feature win in the Capital
remodeling UCAR 20 lap feature. Deem led early, but was passed by point leader Nathan
Brasz near the end. But Deem battled back and took back the top spot with just a few laps
remaining. Deem crossed the stripe just 4 car lengths ahead of Brasz at the end. Bert
Brasz finished third, while Craig Oglevee and David Gonce rounded out the top five.
The exciting Pure Stocks invaded the Old Dominion Speedway once again, and James Loving
from Louisa Va. took home victory honors for his second win in three events. Loving passed
early leader Mike Ganoe in the final laps to secure the win. Ganoe held on for second,
while Brian Smith, Jeff Sweeney, and Ethan Ayers rounded out the top five. Gerald
Frybarger took the checkers, but was later disqualified for an illegal engine, thus
handing the Va. Mini Cup feature win to Kenny Armstrong. The win was Armstrong's first win
this season at ODS.
Next Saturday night the Late Models will compete in a 75 lap event. Also on the schedule
is a 30 lap feature for the Legends, and a 25 lap event for the Va. Sprint Series. A
special 12 lap event for all non-feature winners in the UCAR division is also on tap for
the evening, along with features for the Street Stocks and Pure Stocks. Practice begins at
2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
Polenz Declared Winner Of ODS 75 Lap Event Last Saturday Night
.6/9/11
Runner-up finisher David Polenz was declared the winner of last Saturday night's 75 lap
feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. After
distributors from the top three finishers were removed and inspected this week, it was
determined that the distributor in apparent winner Brandon Brown's Chevy was deemed
illegal. This dropped Brown to the rear of the finishing order, and handed the win to
Polenz. It was his second feature win of the season, which also pushed him to the top of
the points chase. With the additional 5 bonus points for winning, he now leads defending
track champ Adam Brenner by six points. In other news, the shocks from the top finishing
cars in the Legends division were pulled as part of tech inspection, and the ruling is
still being awaited.
Check back to www.olddominionspeedway.com for further details once the ruling has been
announced.
Unofficially, Rette Causey has the win, with Ryan Polenz finishing second.
This Saturday night, the Late Models will be featured in Twin 50 lap events. Also on the
schedule are the INEX / Austin Legends, as they will compete in a 30 lap feature. The Pure
Stocks return to ODS for a 25 lap event, while the Mini Modifieds and the Mini Cups will
also compete in their feature events. Practice for the packed night of racing begins at
2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing takes the green at 7PM.
Brandon Brown Takes The Win Saturday Night At
ODS
.6/4/11
Brandon Brown from Woodbridge Va. piloting the Glory Days Grill Chevy, became the fifth
different winner in 7 events thus far in 2011, taking home the checkers in the 75 lap
feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Brown started
from the pole after the inversion, and grabbed the top spot from outside pole sitter Les
Miranda as they thundered into turn one. Brown was able to build up a comfortable lead as
the other drivers were busy battling for position. David Polenz, who had started fourth,
battled his way through the field and gave Brown a run for his money in the closing laps,
but came up just .323 seconds behind when the checkers flew. Dustin Storm, who seemed to
have one of the strongest efforts early in the event, faded back but was able to hold on
to third. Les Miranda picked up his third top five finish in a row by finishing fourth,
while Dave Daniels came home fifth. Defending track champ Adam Brenner, who had came into
the night's event with an 11 point advantage in the point standings, finished a
disappointing eighth, and handed the point lead over to Polenz by virtue of his second
place finish. Polenz now hold the points lead by just one point over Brenner. Storm is
only six markers back, followed Davey Callihan who is 13 points back. Rette Causey made
the trip to ODS from his hometown of Seaford Va., and picked up what was thought to be his
second feature win in 2011. However, until further inspection for the shocks on the top
two finishers is complete, the entire finishing order is on hold. In the event, Causey
took over the lead on lap 25 from Tyler Hughes after Hughes was sent to the rear of the
field for spinning early leader Brendan Queen. Causey then had to hold off the charging
Ryan Polenz for the win. The winning margin was just .261 second. 12-year old Trevor
Collins came from the 19th starting position to finish third, while Cody Scott and Hughes
rounded out the top five. Jonathan Findley picked up his second feature win in 2011 in the
20 lap Sign Shop Bandolero feature. The race was halted on lap one after a huge accident
in turn one involving co-point leader Mason Diaz and Jake Lowe. The steering in Diaz's
machine broke coming out of turn two, which sent his car hard into the fence. Lowe was
also collected in the melee. Both Diaz and Lowe were unharmed. Once the green was
displayed, Findley cruised to the win over Ryan Plummer. Macy Causey, who came home third,
was DQ'd in post race inspection do to carburetor issues, which moved Dakota Scott into
the third spot. D.J.Powell and Michael Munley rounded out the top five. Bryan Fox picked
up his second win in 2011 in the Capital Remodeling UCAR division. Fox held off a hard
charging John Flanagan for the win. Bert Brasz, Alyssa Welch, and point leader Nathan
Brasz rounded out the top five. And Jerrold Harris wound up in victory lane once again in
the ultra-fast Va. Sprint Series 25 lap event. Harris outdistanced Billy Norfleet at the
end by 10 car lengths. Tony Harris finished third, while Tom Humpries and Brian Lawson
rounded out the top five. Next Saturday night, the Late Models will be featured in Twin 50
lap events. Also on the schedule are the INEX / Austin Legends, as they will compete in a
30 lap feature. The Pure Stocks return to ODS for a 25 lap event, while the Mini Modifieds
and the Mini Cups will also compete in their feature events. Practice for the packed night
of racing begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing takes the green at 7PM.
Darne Takes The Checkers In Tornadoes
100
.5/28/11
Mike Darne from Mooresville NC made the 6 hour trip to the Old Dominion Speedway for
the second time this season and made it worth his while as he claimed top honors in the
Tornadoes 100 feature event for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock
Cars. Darne was the quickest of all qualifiers in his CGL sponsored Chevy, and dominated
the event. Davey Callihan started bon the front row and led the first 3 laps before Darne
pushed his Chevy to the front. It was a view he would never relinquish as he held on from
that point and won the event by just .085 seconds over Callihan at the end. It was not an
easy victory as Callihan was able to get the nose of his machine next to Darne's on a few
occasions, but Darne was able to hold on to the top spot. Finishing third was Dave Moon,
followed by Les Miranda, and Adam Brenner. The point chase is now a bit tighter as
Brenner's lead in now just 11 points over Polenz, and 15 points over 2001 track champ
Dustin Storm. Mason Diaz led from the drop of the green and took home his first feature
win in 2011 in the 20 lap Sign Shop Bandolero event. Starting from the pole, Diaz was able
to hold off Jonathon Findley for the win. Dakota Scott came home third, while D.J. Powell
and Sherry Johnson rounded out the top five. Diaz and Findley are now tied for the point
lead in the division, each having one win thus far. The Capital Remodeling UCAR's were
featured in twin 15 lap events, with point leader Nathan Brasz taking the checkers in the
first feature, and David Gonce picking up his first ever UCAR feature win in the 2nd
event. Brasz has a comfortable 18 point lead in the division over his father Bert Brasz,
who is followed by John Flanagan. Mark Averi made shambles of the field once again in the
25 lap Mid-Atlantic Street Stock feature. Averi was able to stretch his lead at almost at
will over the 25 laps, and easily beat Phil Kenney to the stripe when the checkers flew.
Dave Nobles finished third, while John Mozingo finished fourth. Tyler Hughes took home
feature win number 3 this season in the INEX / Austin Legends 30 lap event. With his win,
he now holds a slight point lead of just 4 markers over Cody Scott. Ryan Polenz, who has
struggled over the first few events of 2011, came back to finish a strong second.
Finishing third was Scott, followed by Kyle Lockrow, and Jeff Harms. Keith Riley led flag
to flag to take home his first win, in how he said "a very, very long time" in
the 25 lap Mini Modified feature. Riley was able to hold off veteran Mike Carte throughout
the event, and take home the checkers by just over a few car lengths. Finishing third was
"the Faster Pastor" Pete Green, followed by Bobby Able, and Todd Johnston. Able
and Carte are now tied at the top of the point standings with 54 points, followed by Green
with 44 points. Next Saturday night will feature a 75 lap event for the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Also on the schedule is a 30 lap feature for
the Austin / INEX Legends, a 20 lap feature for the Capital Remodeling UCAR's, a 35 lap
events for the Mid-Atlantic Street Stocks, and a 20 lap feature for the up and coming
stars of the Sign Shop Bandolero division. The Va. Sprint Series are also on the schedule,
as they will compete in heat races and a 25 lap feature. Practice begins at 2PM, with
qualifying set for 5PM. Heat races and feature events will take the green flag at 7PM.
Brenner, Polenz Claim Victories In Twin LM
Features
.5/21/11
With all the rainouts thus far this season, it was only a matter of
time when the Old Dominion Speedway had to start scheduling double events on a Saturday
night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Cars. Fans love them, drivers
hate them. But in and effort to get all the events in for the drivers to be eligible for
NASCAR contingencies, track officials must begin the painstaking process of inserting
double-features in the schedule before the September 17th deadline. Saturday
night marked the first of probably many of those nights. Two drivers that probably
dont hate double feature nights right now are Adam Brenner and David Polenz. Both
drivers wound up in victory lane Saturday night the twin 50 lap events. Brenner started on
the outside of row one in the first event, and closely followed early leader Davey
Callihan until lap 38 when he muscled his way into the lead. Callihan was able to squeeze
in behind Brenner before being dropped back any further by former track champion Dustin
Storm and David Polenz. Brenner would lead the final 12 circuits and take home his second
win in 2011 by 1.259 seconds. Storm would hold on to third, while Polenz and Mike Southard
rounded out the top five.
With the inversion process, Polenz would start on the pole for the second twin event, and
lead flag-to-flag, taking home his first feature win in 2011. Storm would follow Polenz
throughout the event, but came up short at the checkers by .0755 seconds. Brandon Brown,
Les Miranda, and Doug Liberman rounded out the top five. With his win, Polenz becomes the
third different driver in 4 events to score a win in 2011. Brenner, who wound up 6th
in the event after an on-track altercation with Callihan, still holds a slim points lead
in the division with 122 points over Polenz, who now sits second with 111 points.
Mike Chapman made the trip to the famed 3/8 mile oval for the first time and scored the
win in the 20 lap Capital Remodeling UCAR feature. Chapman started on the pole and led
every lap, easily taking home victory honors over John Flanagan. Third place went to
defending track champ Bryan Fox, followed by 2-time 2011 feature winner Nathan Brasz, and
Bert Brasz. Nathan Brasz still holds the point lead over Fox by just 4 points. Bert Brasz
is just 12 points out in third.
Tyler Hughes took over the top spot from early leader Ryan Polenz on lap 8 and held on to
win the 30 lap Austin Legends / INEX Legends feature. The win was Hughes 2nd
victory of the season, and pushed him into a tie for the points lead with Cody Scott, who
finished third. Finishing fourth was Greg Rittenhouse, followed by Trevor Collins. Hughes
and Scott are tied with 118 points, followed by Collins with 114 points. Rittenhouse and
Steve Cypher are tied in the standings with 98, followed by Jeff Harms with 86 points.
Tim Brown dominated the 20 lap Mini Cup event, easily taking home his second win in 2011.
Gavin Jenkins made up a lot of ground in a valiant attempt to grab the win at the end, but
came up just .419 seconds short at the end. Kenny Armstrong finished third, followed by
Gerald Frybarger and Ben Burch.
Next Saturday night is the re-scheduled Tornados 100 lap feature for the Late Models. Also
on the schedule are twin 15 lap features for the UCARs, a 30 lap feature for the
Legends, a 25 lap feature for the Mini Modifieds, and a 20 lap feature for the Sign Shop
Bandoleros. Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the
green flag at 7PM.
Shocker: Rain Once Again Foils Plans At
ODS
.5/14/11
Yet again, rains have postponed events at the Old Dominion Speedway
in Manassas. Halfway through May, and the most divisions have raced less than three
events. All divisions practiced and just before the Late Models were to qualify, that
pesky mist that has hampered the speedway over the past several weeks came through and
forced track officials to call off the nights events. Scheduled events included the
Tornados 100 lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars.
Old Dominion Speedway will try one more time next Saturday night with Twin 50 lap features
for the Late Model. Also on MARF Night, the schedule is for the INEX Legends
to compete in a 30 lap event, along with a 20 lap feature for the Capital Remodeling
UCARs. The SRL Mini Cups return to ODS for a 20 lap feature, while the popular Pure
Stock division will compete in a 35 lap event.
Practice for all divisions begin at 2:00 PM, with qualifying set for 5:00 PM. Racing
action takes the green at 7:00 PM.
The Tornadoes 100 that was scheduled has been re-scheduled for Saturday Night, May 28th.
In addition to the purse for the winning driver, and additional $2000.00 has been added.
The 2nd place finisher will pick up an additional $1000.00.
Storm Back In Victory Lane
.5/7/11
Its been quite some time since former track champion Dustin
Storm had visited victory lane, but he didnt have a hard time finding it Saturday
night as he dominated the 75 lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late
Model Stock Car feature. Storm started on the pole and led flag-to-flag, taking the
checkers with ease enroute the win. After crashing out early in the opener (and finishing
16th out of 19 cars), the win was just what the 2001 Late Model champion needed
to thrust himself back in contention for a second championship. Now just 16 points out of
the lead, Storm is now a force to be reckoned with. Another strong performance was turned
in by young Davey Callihan, another one of those drivers that needed a good finish after
bad start in the opener. Callihan was involved in an early crash two weeks ago, and wound
up finishing 15, but a second place effort by the 3rd generation driver also
put him back in contention. Rounding out the top 5 were David Polenz, Brandon Brown, and
Doug Liberman. Adam Brenner, who took home the win in the opener, started from the 8th
spot and came home 8th. He still maintains the point lead in the division over
Liberman by 3 points.
Rette Causey returned to the Old Dominion Speedway after a dominating 2010 season and took
home the win in the 30 lap Austin / INEX Legends feature. Causey took over the top spot on
lap 9 and held off his protégé young Brenden Queen, the 13-year old who made his first
ODS start. Finishing third was Trevor Collins, another youngster (12 years old) in the
Legends division. Fourth place went to Cody Scott, followed by Greg Rittenhouse. Collins
and Scott currently sit atop the Legends division point standings, tied at 84 points.
Bryan Fox and Bert Brasz battled for the final 10 circuits, trading paint and tire marks,
with Fox coming out on top in the Capital Remodeling 20 lap UCAR feature. The had the
crowd on their feet as they battled for the top spot. Neither driver gave an inch, but
both were sideways on more than one occasion. At the end, Fox would emerge as the winner
by less than a car length. Brasz would have to settle for 2nd, while 2-time
feature winner Nathan Brasz, Jonathan Flanagan, and Craig Oglevee rounded out the top 5.
Veteran Mike Carte took the lead from Pete Green late in the event and held off Bobby Able
for his first win in 2011 in the Mini Modified 25 lap event. Todd Johnston, Joe Riley, and
Green rounded out the top 5.
Other racing action for the night included a 25 lap Street Stock feature, easily won by
Mark Averi. Gerald Frybarger picked up his first ever ODS feature win in the 20 lap SRL
Mini Cup feature. And James Loving took home the checkers in the 30 lap Pure Stock event.
Brian Smith, Mike Ganoe, Roger Davis, and Jaime Groome rounded out the top 5.
Next Saturday night is the first extra distance event for the Late Models. The Tornadoes
100, powered by On-The-Go Stores is putting up an additional $2000.00 to the winner of the
event, with an additional $1000.00 to the second place finisher. Also on the schedule is a
20 lap event for the Capital Remodeling UCARs, a 30 lap event for the Austin / INEX
Legends, 25 laps for the Va. Sprint Series, 20 laps for the Sign Shop Bandoleros, and a 30
lap feature for the Va. Mini Cup Racing Association. Practice begins at 2PM, with
qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.

Rain Prevails Again
.4/16/11
Once again, April rains have dampened the spirits of the racing
community at the Old Dominion Speedway. What had been forecast all week became a reality
as heavy rains are indeed the story of the day. This is the second week in a row that
weather has impacted the schedule at ODS. Last Saturday night, the Legends and the Late
Model features were both canceled due to a heavy mist that rolled in late in the evening.
At this point, both divisions have yet to race a competitive lap in 2011. Features for the
SRL Mini Cups, UCARs, Mini Modifieds and The Sign Shop Bandoleros were completed
last week before the weather rolled in.
The schedule for next Saturday night will include a 100 lap feature for the Burger King
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Drivers in the division will be
able to purchase 4 tires for this event. In addition, the INEX Legends cars will compete
in a 30 lap event, along with a 25 lap feature for the Mini Modifieds, and a 20 lap
feature for the Capital Remodeling UCAR's. Returning for the first time in 2011 are the
Va. Sprint Series, competing in a 25 lap feature. A new division this season to the Old
Dominion Speedway are the Pure Stocks. This division competed mainly in the Richmond area,
but with Southside Speedway dark this season, they have elected to compete at ODS this
season. They will be competing in a 35 lap event.
Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
One additional note, the Old Dominion Kart Series, which competes on Sundays at ODS, has
canceled their activities for tomorrow due the heavy rains as well.
Rains Play Havoc With ODS
Activities
.4/9/2011
It was a dreary, cloudy, dismal day. The forecast called for
temps in the low 50s, low skies, but no rain. But no one forecast the mist that
began to fall late in the evening. A mist that halted racing activities at the Old
Dominion Speedway 3/5ths of the way through the program. The mist, hardly
thick enough to see, but hard enough to blanket the legendary 3/8 mile oval, forced track
officials to call it a night. With temperatures dropping, and heat rapidly draining from
the track, the INEX Legends cars, who were just about to start their feature, were parked
after several attempts to keep heat in the racing surface. So with that, both features,
the Legends and the Late Models, were cancelled.
However, there were four divisions that did get their features in prior to the mist. The
INEX / Sign Shop Bandoleros started the night out with a 20 lap event. Jonathan Findley,
who had 3 wins last season along with 1 pole position, was the quick qualifier with a
20.172 lap. Mason Diaz was the second quickest with a 20.239 lap, followed by Dakota Scott
(20.843) and Michael Munley (21.023). Diaz grabbed the top spot on the start and was able
to hold on until Findley powered around him for the lead just a few laps later. Diaz was
right on his bumper but spun as the two were overcoming slower traffic. Diaz was put to
the back of the field but made his way through the pack to finished second behind Findley.
Munley wound up third, followed by Scott, and Alex McCollum.
The SRL Mini Cups made their 2011 debut with Tim Brown leading flag-to-flag, easily taking
home the win. The battle for second was the battle of the night as two youngsters, Ben
Burch and Gavin Jenkins, both under the age of 13, raced hard for the entire event. Burch
would be able to hold off Jenkins for the runner-up spot at the end by less than a car
length. Kevin Bissom, in his first-ever ODS start, came home 4th, followed by
Steve Shreck.
The Mini Modified feature was won by Bobby Able. A bit of a short field showed up for
opening night, but nonetheless, it was a competitive 20 laps between Able, Mike Carte, and
Pete Green. All three drivers battled nose-to-tail, with Able taking the top spot about
mid-way through the event. Able held off Carte at the end, with Green a close third.
Nathan Brasz picked up his first ever feature win in the UCAR division. Brasz qualified
first and started on the pole next to multi-time track champ Bryan Fox. They battled
throughout the 20 lap event, at one point side-by-side for 7 laps. Brasz held on for the
win, while Fox finished less than a car length behind. Craig Oglevee finished third, while
Darren Brasz and Alyssa Welch rounded out the top five.
Shortly after, the mist rolled in and all racing action was halted.
Next
Saturday night, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series cars will compete in what will be
their first competitive event on the 10-inch Hoosier tires this season. Also on the
schedule is a 35 lap feature for the Mid-Atlantic Street Stocks, a 30 lap event for the
INEX / Austin Legends, and 20 laps for both the Sign Shop Bandoleros and the UCARs.
Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM
