Lawrence Takes Home ODS Late Model Feature .......4/12/08
Willard Lawrence from Haymarket Va., driving the Foster's
Grille Pontiac, took home the feature win Saturday night at the Old
Dominion Speedway in the 75-lap feature for the NASCAR / Whelen
All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars. Lawrence took over the top spot
from polesitter Robert Bruce on lap 21, and breezed to the win on the cool evening. Earlier in the day, Lawrence took home his 2nd quick
qualifier award, circling the 3/8 oval in 16.223 seconds. Except this
week, the car he would qualify so well in, would be the car he would
actually start the race in. Last Saturday night, Lawrence was forced into
a back-up car after the #17 Pontiac developed an electrical problem prior
to the start of the race. He would hop into old faithful #7, an untested
car, and come back to finish second behind Adam Brenner. This week would
be a bit different as he clearly had the car to beat. After taking the
lead, he ran just quick enough to stay in front of Bruce, who closed the
gap late in the event, but would come up 1.542 seconds short at the
checkers. Brenner would wind up third, followed by Michael Arnold and Les
Miranda. Lawrence now leads the point standings by 2 over Brenner. David
Polenz finally got the elusive win he has been looking for, taking the
checkers in the Finish Line Towing / INEX Legends 30 lap-feature. Last
season, Polenz actually took the checkers, but a rules infraction negated
that win. This time, after taking the checkers and going through tech, he
officially has a notch in the win column. Ryan Ellis, who took home his
second pole of the season earlier in the day, made a valiant attempt to
take the win in the final yards, came home second less than a car length
behind Polenz. Brian Fox took home win number two in the Victory Lane
Graphix / Advanced Auto Care UCAR 20-lap feature. After battling
side-by-side with early leader Billy Ingle, Fox took the top spot with
only a few laps to go and beat Ingle to the stripe by 5 car lengths. Bobby
Able took the checkers for the second week in a row in the 25-lap Mini
Modified division. Able took over the to spot from veteran Mike Carte just
past the halfway point, and never looked back to secure the win. Carte
held on for second, followed by Scott Gore. The race was stopped early due
to a crash involving Steve Purks and Al Dailey. Both cars tangled entering
turn one, sending Purks hard into the fence. He was taken to the hospital
as a precautionary measure and released later that night. Steven Cox
continued his mastery of the famed 3/8 mile, taking home the win in the
SRL Mini Cup Series 20-lap feature. Cox took over the top spot and held
off veteran Ron Robbins for the win. Steven Teter would come back from an
early spin and finish third. Next Saturday night, the ODS Late Models will
compete in a 75 lap feature. Also on the schedule is a 30-lap Mini
Modified feature, a 30-lap Legends feature, and a 20-lap UCAR feature.
Practice begins at 2PM, followed by qualifying at 5PM. Racing action is
set to take the green at 7PM.
