Steps It Up: Takes Win
Number 3.......6/7/08
Adam Brenner, who dodged disaster when the
scheduled events last Saturday night were rained out, came back with a
vengeance and picked up his third win in 2008, holding on to beat point
leader Willard Lawrence for the win in the NASCAR / Whelen All-American
Series feature for the Late Models. The event was shortened from it's
originally scheduled 75-lap distance to 61 laps due to excessive
lightening in the area around the 3/8 mile facility. Lawrence picked up
his 4th quick qualifier award earlier in the hot, muggy afternoon with a
lap of 16.424 in his Foster's Grille Pontiac. Ray Terczak was second
quickest in his Dulles Jet Center Chevy with a 16.450 lap. Third quickest
was Brenner's Moe's Southwest Grille Ford with a 16.531 lap. Mike Arnold's
Danny's Auto Service Pontiac (16.576) and Les Miranda in the Va. BBQ Chevy
(16.579) rounded out the top five qualifiers. With the inversion, Arnold
would start on the pole, but it was Brenner who got the jump on the start,
leading the field into turn one. Lawrence, who had started in the third
row, managed to make his way up through the field, taking over the second
spot on lap 22, pushing Terczak back a spot. Terczak would later spin his
Chevy in turn four, and retire with mechanical issues a few laps later.
From then on, the two leaders posted nearly identical lap times, with
Brenner hold on to his advantage. Then the weather came into play, as dark
clouds began to surround the area, along with some intense lightening.
Track officials threw the red-checkered flag on lap 61 for the safety of
track personnel and the fans in attendance. Brenner was declared the victor
"I hated to see the race end because racers want to race every lap up
until the end" Lawrence said. "But I also understand that safety
should come first, so it was a good call" he added. Polesitter Arnold
held on to finish third, while Miranda and Doug Liberman rounded out the
top five. The Mini Modifieds competed in twin 20 lap events for the first
time, and veteran Al Dailey and Scott Gore celebrated with wins in each
event. Dailey was clearly the quickest car in race one, holding off point
leader Bobby Able for the win. Gore held off Able for the win in race two,
taking the checkers for his first win in 2008. Point leader David Polenz
from New Jersey picked up win number four in 2008, taking the checkers in
the 30 lap Finish Line Towing / INEX Legends feature. Polenz held off
quick qualifier Roger Austin Jr. for the win by .894 seconds at the end.
The race was red-flagged on lap five for a spectacular crash in turn one
involving Dave Daniels. The incident, which was his second hard crash in
the last couple of weeks, sent Daniels flipping at least eight times. He
was OK and talking to officials, but was taken to Prince William hospital,
with his status unknown at the time of this release. Billy Ingle dominated
the Victory Lane Graphix / Advanced Auto Care UCAR 20 lap feature, leading
virtually every lap, and holding off Brian Fox at the stripe. The win was
Ingle's second win of the season. Albert Anderson came home third, while
Greg Sites and Steve Brady rounded out the top five. Next Saturday night,
the Late Models are scheduled for twin 50 lap features. In addition, the
UCARS are scheduled for a 20 lap event, along with a 30 lap feature for
the Mini Modifieds, and a 30 lap event for the Legends. Also on tap is a
special event for the MACKA Champ karts. Practice begins at 2PM, with
qualifying set for 5PM. Racing action takes the green at 7PM.
